Imposter syndrome is a common experience, particularly for women. Many competent women live in fear that they’ll be “discovered” as being a fraud: not really worthy of their job or status. I’ve come to believe there’s a single root cause for this. Imposter syndrome happens when we don’t know really know ourselves.

I’m going to speak just to the women for a moment. Dear goddess: do you know how special you are? Do you know you are a powerful, divine being? Do you believe that you are here on this Earth at this very moment with a mission that only you can fulfill? Or do you think that you are unremarkable? Perhaps you’re even uncomfortable with me addressing you as a goddess. And yet, you denying it doesn’t make it any less true. You are goddess!

I used to be a people manager. I would do annual performance reviews with my team members. Unfortunately, this issue of imposter syndrome showed up a lot with the women on my team. Sometimes they would disregard their unique strengths as things that anyone could do. They would look at their mistakes and blow them out of proportion. They would underrate their achievements. I even had some outright tell me they felt like an imposter when they were doing really good work.

The work of the initiate (those who study in the ancient mystery schools) is to Know Thyself. Specifically, it is to know yourself as a divine being – the god or goddess of your own life. That means to know that you have the power to create your reality, and accept that you are doing that every single day.

Would you rather create your reality consciously or unconsciously? Would you rather go around believing you are powerless and a victim? Or would you rather have tools to say, “No, I don’t like this. And I have the power to change it.”? Or “I know I can create the life I want because I am powerful.”? And “I know I deserve this because I know my own worth!”

I don’t think you can ever say “I have arrived” in this life, because this life is not static. The goal is to have a clear picture of who you are now. Know your abilities, believe in yourself, while acknowledging there is room for growth. That is the path to a joyful, fulfilling and dynamic life.
